Gabrielle Lewis is a young woman who is a student at the University of Akron. She is, or rather, was, the owner of a third generation, early 2000s Hyundai Elantra. What happened is that Lewis left her car parked near the University of Akron at the same time that there was an off-campus annual party dubbed "Sumner Fest 2013", which is not sanctioned by the university.
Summer, party, university students and booze usually go hand-in-hand, one thing led to another, and before you could say "tequila shots", there were hundreds of drunken students acting like party animals and who at some point, collectively targeted Lewis' Hyundai. The started throwing various objects at, kicking it, punching it and eventually things really got out of hand and they flipped it over, completing its destruction.
To make matters worse, Lewis insurance will not cover the damages caused by the partygoers.
“It was well over 1,500 people that showed up,” Gabriel Lewis, who lives on Sumner Street, told Fox news. “You were shoulder to shoulder in yards and streets and everything," she said.
"We usually try to keep it in the yards. This is my third year and it was definitely the biggest I have ever seen,” said Brandon Lewis, who also lives on Sumner Street.
“All I could think is I need to protect it," explained Gabriel Lewis. "So actually, me and a couple of friends went out and we circled around it trying to keep people from it, but there’s only a couple of us and there’s a thousand of them."
Police are said to be checking out videos of the event that were posted on social media channels, however, Lewis says she doesn't want to press charges herself.
“I’m trying my hardest not to press charges, " said Lewis. "Honestly, I just want to get in contact with people and see if they can help pay for the damage that they did. If they have the ability to damage the car, then they should have the ability to help pay back the car as well.”
For now, Lewis' friend Jackie Cahill has set up a donation page on "GoFundMe" targeting the sum of $5,500 to help her pay for the damage or get into another car.
Jackie Cahill notes on the page:
"On 8/31/13, "sumner fest" was happening at University of Akron. Long story short, my brothers girlfriend, Gabrielle Lewis' car was vandalized, flipped over, and lit into flames where several people threw solid objects breaking her headlights, smashing the windows with bats and throwing what looks to be like firecrackers inside of her vehicle, which in the end, ended up catching fire. This donation page is being made due to her insurance not covering the damages whatsoever. Anything would be a huge help! Thank you for your consideration!"
As of now, $1,550 have been raised. Will you help her out? If the answer is yes, click here for a donation.
Just food for thought, but with all the publicity this incident has and will likely receive, we're really surprised that an automaker – why not Hyundai itself – hasn't stepped in to offer her some kind of a deal that would help her and surely benefit the company. Basically, instead of creating another dreary commercial that could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, why not give her a new car or deal at only a fraction of the cost, and possibly win more attention from social and regular media channels? What do you think?
